the light rose
at a peculiar slant today -
blinded the birds
and they did not sing,
blistered the petals of roses,
and near the ocean
the hearts of lovers
stung with sea salt.

the vine of spring
grows deep inside
our throats now.
it blooms and suffocates
with rich color and
wild honeysuckle.
the abundance is
sweet and painful
so the summer sun rises
to burn it all away
